Our one day coastal foraging Staithes course is a great way to learn about the diversity of edible seaweed and shellfish on our rocky coasts.
We start off the day exploring the foreshore, looking at the seaweeds that we can harvest for food and at the different species of crabs and shellfish in the rock pools and gullies. Foraging on this beautiful piece of coastline is always an adventure there can be all sorts from Velvet swimmer crabs and baby lobsters to Pepper Dulse and Laver. If the weather permits we will pull in lobster pots at low tide and explain the local conservation policy.
After our morning on the foreshore we return to Staithes with our foraged food. Lunch is in the Endeavour Restaurant where we cook up a delicious light meal and you can taste our wild harvest. In the afternoon we look at some of the unusual edible plants that are particular to this coastline along with any other seasonal wild edibles we find along the way.
Learn about edible seaweeds, crabs and lobsters, where to find them and how to cook them. Chris will demonstrate some shellfish preparation and some simple tasty recipes.
We are strong advocates of responsible and sustainable foraging and we will show you how to collect your wild edibles in a way that will have minimum impact on the landscape.
The minimum age for the Coastal foraging Staithes course is 8 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The course fees do not include car parking charges. Please dress for the weather, wellies and waterproofs are usually best!
