This day course is the perfect taster to Coastal foraging. It will give you an insight into the variety of seaweeds that we can eat and the different edible crab and shellfish species that are around. Chris will demonstrate some shellfish preparation and some simple tasty recipes.

This coastal day course is based in the beautiful village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire Coast. Our lunch stop is the Smugglers or the Old Sunday School in the middle of old Staithes.

The course price includes tuition, lunch and any other foraged food collected and cooked and tea or coffee at lunch time. It doesn’t include car parking charges or fishing trip costs.

Bad weather policy

Sometimes the sea is too rough to put lobster pots in (they would be smashed by the waves), if this is the case we will endeavour to buy some live lobsters for course participants to see. Please dress for the weather, wellies and waterproofs are usually best!

The minimum age for this course is 8 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

One Day Coastal Foraging Course.
Seaweeds and Shellfish in Staithes.

Course Description

Our one day course is a great way to learn about the diversity of edible seaweed and shellfish on our rocky coasts.

We start off the day exploring the foreshore, looking at the seaweeds that we can harvest for food and at the different species of crabs and shellfish in the rockpools and gullies. Foraging on this beautiful piece of coastline is always an adventure there can be all sorts from Velvet swimmer crabs and baby lobsters to Pepper Dulse and Laver. If the sea is calm we will pull in lobster pots at low tide and check the lobsters for size. We will show you how to size them and explain the local conservation policy.

After our morning on the foreshore we return to Staithes with our foraged food. Lunch is in the Smugglers gallery or Old Sunday School where you can taste our wild food harvest. After lunch we will be looking at some of the unusual edible plants that are particular to this coastline.

The course starts at 9.00am and finishes at 4.00pm. There is the possibility to add a fishing trip to the end of your day with our friend and local skipper Sean Baxter. This should be booked separately by calling 01947 840278

Sample Itinerary

  Free time to explore
12.30pm Shellfish preparation demo, wild food tasting and lunch at the Smugglers
2.30pm Wild food walk around Staithes
4.00pm Course finishes
