This day course takes you to places seldom seen, it gives you a taste of the wild usually reserved for fine restaurants. We will show you wild fish, shellfish and sea vegetables that live and grow around our sandy coasts. You will taste freshly boiled Brown Shrimps, a variety of different saltmarsh vegetables and maybe other things! This coastal course is based in the Cumbrian village of Flookburgh at the top of Morecambe Bay.

The course price includes tuition, a fishing and shrimping trip, tea and coffee at lunchtime (and toilet facilities) It does not include parking charges or lunch.

The minimum age for this course is 12 years and under 16's must be accompanied by an adult. Places are limited to 10 per course.

Please dress for the weather, it feels colder out on the bay, wellies and waterproofs are usually best!

Bad weather policy

In the unlikely event that the weather makes it unsafe to go out into Morecambe Bay there will be alternative sessions. These could include net making, hot smoking, or extra shoreline foraging sessions with experts Chris and Steve.

The decision to cancel the trip out into the Bay will be solely at Steve Manning’s discretion and will be final.

One Day Coastal Foraging Course.
Sand and Saltmarsh in Flookburgh.

Course Description

We start off the day with a tractor trip out into Morecambe Bay. Our expert local guide is Steve Manning, whose family have worked on the sands for three generations and there is much to learn!

We discover the secrets of netting flat fish (if we’re lucky we might catch some) and watch Steve and his partner shrimping with a tractor and jalopy. Morecambe Bay is an amazing place to be and to see these traditional fishing methods is a real privilege. The shrimping nets reveal a diverse range of sealife, we sort out the shrimps and take them back to shore to boil up a batch. Cockles, Tellins and Mussels can also be found in the bay and we will explain the fishing of them and the conservation policies.

After our morning on the bay we return to Flookburgh village hall for hot drinks and our packed lunches. The afternoon is spent on the saltmarsh – another amazing wild landscape. Here we learn about some delicious sea vegetables. We will taste them and collect some to take home.

Be prepared for a truly memorable day, wellies and waterproofs are recommended.

1.45pm Foraging walk on the salt marsh
