Discover the wide variety of edible seaweeds, shellfish and plants on the beautiful Yorkshire coast. Forage in pools and gullies and around the pretty village of Staithes.
Our one day coastal foraging course is a great way to learn about the diversity of edible seaweed and shellfish on our rocky coasts.
We start off the day exploring the foreshore, looking at the seaweeds that we can harvest for food and at the different species of crabs and shellfish in the rock pools and gullies. Foraging on this beautiful piece of coastline is always an adventure there can be all sorts from Velvet swimmer crabs and baby lobsters to Pepper Dulse and Laver. If the weather permits we will pull in lobster pots at low tide and explain the local conservation policy.
After our morning on the foreshore we return to Staithes with our foraged food. Lunch is in the Endeavour Restaurant where we cook up a delicious light meal and you can taste our wild harvest. In the afternoon we look at some of the unusual edible plants that are particular to this coastline.
Learn about edible seaweeds, crabs and lobsters, where to find them and how to cook them. Chris will demonstrate some shellfish preparation and some simple tasty recipes.
We are strong advocates of responsible and sustainable foraging and we will show you how to collect your wild edibles in a way that will have minimum impact on the landscape.
The minimum age for this course is 8 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The course fees do not include car parking charges. Please dress for the weather, wellies and waterproofs are usually best!

"Thank you so much for a fantastic foraging afternoon followed by a truly delicious meal. I can still taste that hogweed! You two are clearly passionate about foraging and that enthusiasm has definitely rubbed off on me."
"I wanted to thank you for inviting me to the coastal foraging course. I enjoyed it enormously, I really had a great time. Waking on the beach isn't going to be the same ever again! Thank you. Take care and keep up good work. It was truly inspirational."
"Thank you so much for the fantastic foraging day last Sunday. It was an inspired birthday present from my sister. I thought I knew quite a lot about plants but I learned masses and loved smoking the trout for lunch and learning how to fillet a fish. Have had a look at your blog and definitely going to try the Meadowsweet creme brulee soon. Was great to meet you and I hope our paths cross again."
"What a fantastic course and few days in Staithes. Your hard work, skill, knowledge and enthusiasm were all evident and much appreciated by all of us. Many thanks for looking after us so well. We will without doubt recommend you to others, confident they will enjoy it as much as we all did. Looking forward to foraging on the Lewis sea shore and harvesting delicious sea weed. I fear that it may not be cooked quite as well as that memorable meal on Thursday night but we'll live in hope! Best wishes and many, many thanks."
