Discover the diverse wild food of the sandy shore. This is an area of great food history and amazing landscapes. Be prepared for a truly memorable day, wellies and waterproofs are recommended!
On our one day coastal foraging course at Flookburgh we start the day with a tractor trip out into Morecambe Bay. Our expert local guide is Michael Wilson, whose family have worked on the sands for three generations – there is much to learn!
We discover the secrets of netting flat fish and watch Michael and his dad shrimping with tractors and jalopies. Morecambe Bay is an amazing place to be and to see these traditional fishing methods is a real privilege. The shrimping nets reveal a diverse range of sealife, we sort out the shrimps and back at the shore Michael boils up a batch. Cockles, Tellins and Mussels can also be found in the bay and we will explain the fishing and conservation policies.
After our morning on the bay we return to Flookburgh village hall for hot drinks and our packed lunches. The afternoon is spent on the saltmarsh where we learn about some delicious sea vegetables. We will taste them and collect some to take home.
This one day coastal foraging course takes you to places seldom seen and gives you a taste of wild brown shrimps and sea vegetables usually reserved for fine restaurants.
We are strong advocates of responsible and sustainable foraging techniques and we will show you how to collect your wild edibles in a way that will have little impact on the landscape.
We will also teach you about the legalities of foraging and how, where and when you can forage for food, whilst keeping on the right side of the law.

"Thank you so much for a fantastic foraging afternoon followed by a truly delicious meal. I can still taste that hogweed! You two are clearly passionate about foraging and that enthusiasm has definitely rubbed off on me."
"I wanted to thank you for inviting me to the coastal foraging course. I enjoyed it enormously, I really had a great time. Waking on the beach isn't going to be the same ever again! Thank you. Take care and keep up good work. It was truly inspirational."
"Thank you so much for the fantastic foraging day last Sunday. It was an inspired birthday present from my sister. I thought I knew quite a lot about plants but I learned masses and loved smoking the trout for lunch and learning how to fillet a fish. Have had a look at your blog and definitely going to try the Meadowsweet creme brulee soon. Was great to meet you and I hope our paths cross again."
"What a fantastic course and few days in Staithes. Your hard work, skill, knowledge and enthusiasm were all evident and much appreciated by all of us. Many thanks for looking after us so well. We will without doubt recommend you to others, confident they will enjoy it as much as we all did. Looking forward to foraging on the Lewis sea shore and harvesting delicious sea weed. I fear that it may not be cooked quite as well as that memorable meal on Thursday night but we'll live in hope! Best wishes and many, many thanks."
